There’s a downside to being coupled up for long periods, certainly, but it has its compensations. I will say that endlessly coupling in more random fashion quickly becomes an empty ritual for me, not that the notion of it isn’t compelling from time to time. My difficulty has been, I think, laying hold of someone who is too young, too taken with me and too vulnerable but willing to jump off that cliff without thinking. And I drag them along. I would rather be alone than to cause that sort of damage again, even if it’s simply a part of their life. I don’t want to be someone’s everything.
