This seems to be the week of rediscovering books I haven’t read in a long time (like The Catcher in the Rye). I remember this passage really well. I tend to dismiss White, and I really did not like his last novel, about Stephen Crane. But this reminds me how good he can be. “Tom” is really Howard Moss, who was poetry editor of the New Yorker for many years.
